Density and appearance.
The density of gold leaf may affect its appearance on different types of frames. At lower densities the gold leaf becomes somewhat translucent which allows the color of the undercoat to seep through the gold leaf. For instance, a yellowish undercoat brings forth the richness of the gold, whereas a reddish undercoat brings forth the warmth of the gold.
What is the standard measure of weight?
Gold leaf is so thin that the only practical method of determining its density is by its weight. The standard measure of weight used is grams per 1000 sheets. The range is from a bit over 11 gr/1000 to 29 gr/1000. Some of these weights are only made to order, so call us at Athens Framing Gallery and we can determine the best solution and give you a free quote.
